How Scale Affects Ice Production
The mechanism behind gradual output loss, and why descaling recovers more ice than most part replacements.
Scale is an insulator
Ice machines work by moving heat out of water through an evaporator surface. Mineral deposits on that surface act as insulation, so the machine runs longer to freeze the same water, using more energy for less ice.
Then it breaks the harvest
Scale also stops ice releasing cleanly. Harvest cycles extend, cubes come off incomplete or misshapen, and eventually the plate freezes solid and the machine locks out.
Measuring the recovery
We record cycle time and ice weight before and after descaling, so the improvement is visible rather than assumed. On a neglected machine the difference is often dramatic.
